The Curious Case Of Dimitar Berbatov

Dimitar Berbatov is definitely one gem of a footballer. A true footballing professional. A man who does not complain much, when is rare in today's footballing world. When one thinks of Berbatov, two words come into mind, sexy football. He joined Manchester United in the 2008 summer transfer window for a fee of £30 million from London outfit Tottenham Hotspurs.

"Dimitar is a great player, you can see the quality. He is fantastic. There are very few players who can produce moments like he does. It can decide them." Sir Alex Ferguson shortly after Berbatov signed for United in 2008.

His cool, calm nature to fooball is certainly beautiful to the eyes. Nevertheless, his stay at Manchester United would always be one  of mixed reviews. Some quarters have labelled him as being 'lazy' because he is prone to drift in and out of games down  while some call him a 'genius' in due to his own style of play, moving into pockets and picking out pin-point passes and setting up goal-scoring chances for his time-mates.

The former Bulgarian international certainly had his ups and downs at Old Trafford. His finest moment as a Manchester United came in the 2010/2011 season where he had finished the season as the joint top scorer with Manchester City and former Red Carlos Tevez. The season in which we also won our 19th title. Nevertheless, Berbatov had never really settled into the club's footballing philosophy mainly because of the fast tempo that Sir Alex Ferguson has ingrained into team for the past 25 years.

Things got worse for Dimitar as he was left out of the Champions League Final Squad against Barcelona in May 2011. He was overlooked in favor of Micheal Owen for a substitute's role and he spent watching the action from the dressing room. However, after that calamity he vowed to fight on for his place in the squad even though there is competition from the likes of Wanye Rooney, Javier 'Chicarito' Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Micheal Owen (now retired).

The winner of 2 English Premier League titles, 1 UEFA Champions League title, 1 Club World Cup, 1 League Cup and 1 Community Shield in addition to that 56 goals in 149 appearances for the club. He has  certainly  contributed as much as any striker of his caliber could have  for the Red Devils.

Manchester United are ready to sell him at a cost £5m initially with the likes of Fiorentina and Juventus being interested in him but they were turned down by Dimitar. At present, according to reports and his wife, Elena his likely to head back to London to be specific to Fulham F.C. Nevertheless, with all things said and done, Dimitar Berbatov will always have a place in the hearts of the United faithful. He will always be a red-devil.

Thank you Dimitar,
